Teacher Profile – Anthony Winter
Unit 907, "Park Lane Towers"
1 Boomerang Place, Sydney CBD
QUALIFICATIONS: I studied privately for 6 years with
international opera singers Trevor Brown & Kerrie O’Connor;
I've undertaken short courses at the NSW Conservatorium of Music in piano
pedagogy, aural skills & music theory; I studied for 2 years at
the International Institute for Creative Ministries, Sydney (forerunner
of the Wesley Institute), majoring in Voice & Piano (student of
Conservatorium Piano Honours graduate Neil Semmler & Jazz
pianist/composer Alister Spence); and hold a music degree/Teacher's
Diploma in Singing (LTCL) from Trinity College, London, an Associate
Diploma in Performance (ATCL) as well as a Performer's
Certificate and an Associate of Music Diploma (AMusTCL). I am
accredited to teach by the NSW Music Teachers Association (MTA). I
am a member of both the NSW MTA and ANATS (Australian
National Association of Teachers of Singing).
PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE: My performing has been wide-ranging, as a reflection of my eclectic musical interests, and includes singing and playing in a covers pop/rock band ("Heirborn") that toured nationally; singing, playing piano and songwriting as a member of a jazz trio; performing with the Sydney Philharmonia Choir and the UNSW Collegium Musicum : membership of numerous community choirs and instrumental ensembles, including the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra (including two terms as President) & the Chamber Music Society of NSW; performance in and directing of musicals; playing & singing at weddings, recitals, Eisteddfodau and concerts.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I have taught Voice for over 15 years, covering all mainstream styles and techniques, with a special focus on Musical Theatre. My students have found success in auditioning for bands and singing competitions, and I have helped many to obtain roles in music theatre productions. I've guided many students through music exams to qualifications including Performers Certificates in both Singing and Musical Theatre from Trinity College London, Performer's Diplomas in Contemporary Singing from ANZCA, and the Bmus programme at UNSW.
TEACHING METHOD: I apply classical technique to contemporary singing. This strengthens the voice and extends the range, while providing comfort and safety for the performer. You only have one voice – if it gets damaged through bad technique, you can’t go out and buy another. I focus on beauty of tone and the expressive qualities in singing as well as helping students to improve the style and presentation. I help my students select repertoire from their own areas of musical interest, and recommend suitably challenging songs as occasion demands.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: I believe music brings balance to life, as an enrichment & as relaxation, and that there is satisfaction to be found in gradual and consistent improvement. I encourage students to choose pieces that are challenging and which cover a wide range of performing styles and technical skills. My aim is to develop a sound that is natural and individual, while still being powerful enough to project and fill large venues. (e.g. belting technique/ being heard over the guitars etc.) Self confidence comes through mastery of the material. An individual strategy is needed for each student so they can set goals which will increase confidence and stretch their abilities at a pace they are comfortable with. For advanced students I encourage exploration of variations in colour and interpretation, as well as presentation/entertainment issues. (How to work a room/hold the audience’s attention, how to create an act, etc…) .
OTHER SERVICES: Ear training, music theory, music reading,
microphone technique, planning performances/auditions, & from time to time I arrange concerts for
advanced students to present their skills to the general public,
thereby gaining performing experience.
