Interval training via the Wedge system

Play the C major scale on the piano: C D E F G A B C

Now call the note C number 1. D=2, C=3 etc B=7 & C=8.

Now sing the following note patterns over and over slowly, using the piano to learn them. Eventually you should be able to sing all the patterns after being given just note 1, and in any key. (eg 1 could be Eb, in which case 5 would be Bb)

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

1 3 5 3 1

1 5 1

1 8 7 8

1 7 8

1 6 5

1 4 3

1 2 1

8 7 8

8 6 7 8

8 5 5 1

8 4 5 1

8 3 2 1

8 2 1

This covers practically all the intervals ever used by singers, and will develop a strong sense of key and good tuning. It also trains the ear in terms of musicianship & musical interpretation, and provides the groundwork for improvisation, which is used these days in all contemporary styles, including music theatre.
