Benefits of Singing Exams
Students of singing are able to sit for exams in either classical or contemporary singing. the 3 main examining bodies in Australia are the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board), Trinity College, London, & ANZCA (Australian & New Zealand Cultural Arts Ltd). The first two offer exams in classical music, while ANZCA offers exams in both classical and contemporary singing, and allow students to choose songs from music theatre, jazz & pop/rock repertoire.
There are 8 grades of exams followed by Diploma level, but you can choose any to enter for any grade that is most appropriate for one's current level of abilities. While it is recommended to work through the grades one per year, you can do 2 per year, as exams are held in May & November.
Preparing for an exam involves learning specified scales, ear tests & sight-reading tests, as well as 4 varied songs chosen from lists given in the syllabus, & answering general knowledge questions.
The benefits of doing exams include the following:
Exams provide a structured approach to learning, & ensure students cover a wide range of musical skills thoroughly but in a gradual developmental approach, so that by Diploma level the student is a well rounded professional singer, able to work in a variety of styles & contexts, and able to give interesting vocal interpretations that aren't restricted by lack of technical development. exams also provide material for practising, and a set goal with a time limit to work towards. The written report from the examiner is also useful as it provides feedback from a totally unbiased expert listener, who can pick up if any area is being neglected or under-emphasized.
