Building a career

In music doing well at one thing always leads to another. There is a natural progression for artists in terms of developing skills and getting experience, but the precise details only ever become clear in retrospect. Here is a suggested path of many to give you an idea of how you could proceed:

Step 1        Start lessons. Turn up reliably, and stick at it.
Step 2         Maybe do exams. Master some difficult repertoire.
Step 3        Join the chorus of a musical society; join a choir. You will improve tuning, holding a harmony, improve at reading music, learn to move on stage, do some acting, some dancing.
Step 4        Prepare with your teacher for auditions. Either for small roles in a musical, or to sing with a band, or to solo with the choir.
Step 5        Go to auditions. Get audition experience.
Step 6        Finally you get a role, or work with a band or a finalist in a singing competition, or soloist with a choir. Make everything of that opportunity, no matter how small the role. If you do well, it will lead to others.
Step 7        Small roles lead to major roles. The band you're with becomes popular.
Step 8         Recording contract, or professional theatre auditions. Your career has just begun. How well you've prepared for it will determine how far you go.
